Aug 20, Pretty cool. Normally, I really hate George Clooney in anything, and I'm not partial to Nicole Kidman either, but they're both pretty good in this.

One thing that gets The Peacemaker points in my opinion is the main antagonist. The guy plans to nuke major cities, but by the film's end, you actually find yourself sympathizing with him for what he's been through.

Feeling this kind of empathy for a villain is often quite rare, though it's frequently attempted. Aside from this, all I can say is, The Peacemaker is probably worth your time Stephen S Super Reviewer.

The plot is nothing new. Some terrorists decides that New York must be eradicated to teach America a lesson so they steal some nukes and one of them a revenge-obsessed Bosnian suicide bomber tries to set one off in NYC.

Tom Devoe George Clooney. Kelly is a spunky US presidential advisor - attractive, smart and courageous - but one who has never seen combat or watched someone die.

Devoe is a battle-hardened veteran. There is inevitable conflict between Kelly and Devoe but mercifully no romance between the two, who are in any case too busy saving the world from a nuclear bomb to get physical.

The movie fails to satisfy due to many holes and non-credible series of events. Major Spoiler: I can't believe a nuke weapon will make it through international customs just because it was in a box marked "Diplomatic papers - Confidential".

Then right at the end of the movie, why does the terrorist blow his brains out two minutes before the nuke goes off? That gives our heroes a few minutes to disarm the bomb!!!!

Wouldn't he keep talking to push through those two minutes? Deb S Super Reviewer. See all Audience reviews. There are no approved quotes yet for this movie.

After all, it was written during a time where many Christian books of this nature ended up feeling more like self-help with Jesus tacked on. But this work on the biblical position of peacemaking was absolutely phenomenally executed and has held up very well over the years since Sande first wrote it.

There was such care given to the prolific use of Scripture. No cherry-pickin I would have expected a book of this kind, and one about to reach it's year mark would feel dated and overly self-helpy.

No cherry-picking and or taking things wildly out of context. Instead, there was a healthy mix of Scripture where it was appropriate and accurate and then a strong mix of sociological reasoning where appropriate as well.

It was also so thorough and insightful into the nature of discord and the ways of biblically bringing reconciliation. You can tell that this book was written by someone who had worked as a reconciler for many years, and who was notably actually quite good at it!

Sep 12, Jonathan Song rated it really liked it. Clear in its presentation and practical in its application towards how to maintain and bring about peace from a biblical perspective.

Sande speaks both from wisdom from past experiences of conflict mediation and is sensitive to the prospect that conflict resolution isn't so cut and dry.

It's messy and difficult and emotions heavily get involved. He provides helpful models to think through and ask hard reflective questions about the nature of making peace.

I am left wondering two dueling realities Clear in its presentation and practical in its application towards how to maintain and bring about peace from a biblical perspective.

I am left wondering two dueling realities; 1 How good it would be for those involved in conflict resolution to apply the principles listed here 2 How difficult it must be to actually live this with broken sinners who can hardly think straight.

Sande gives many stories of victory in his book to demonstrate how the principles work, but Idealogy and Practice rarely ever come out as neat and tidy as he mentions.

The question I'm left with is the reality that so many of us live in; "What do you do with partial peace? Our youth group has been going through this book throughout this semester, and it has been an absolute blessing.

Ken Sande and Kevin Johnson describe the Biblical approach to conflict in a practical and easy to read way, that is perfect for middle-school and high-school students.

The Biblical truths are so rich that any adult Christian would easily profit from the truth that they write about.

Incredibly convicting and immensely practical, I would highly highly suggest this book, as we all encounter conflict within our daily lives.

On a side note, I disagree with the authors' view of forgiveness that we should not forgive until our offender requests forgiveness.

However, since this is such a small problem in such a fantastic book, it was not a huge issue for me. Again, highly suggest reading this book.

I have never read a book on interpersonal relationships with this level of practical, helpful and needed content like this one.

Most of us avoid conflict or wait until our frustration builds up to the point of exploding on another person.

This is a must read for anyone dealing with a difficult relationship in their life. Ken's wisdom and experience as a lawyer and commited follow of Jesus makes this book worth the time and effort to read it.

Apr 03, Donald Owens II rated it really liked it. A very helpful manual on dealing with interpersonal conflict. Helpful, biblical guidance on how to bring conflict to peaceful resolution. Sande is a lawyer, full-time Christian conciliator, and church elder.

The audiobook doesn't include all the Scripture citations that are in text version. I listened to the abridged audiobook.

I read this because it was recommended by a pastor who's a biblical counselor and very familiar with Sande's Peacemaker Ministries and Relational Wisdom Part 1: Glorify God Conflict Provides Opportunities Personal peacemaking can Helpful, biblical guidance on how to bring conflict to peaceful resolution.

Glorify God: How can I please and honor God in this situation? Get the log out of your own eye: How can I show Jesus' work in me by taking responsibility for my contribution to this conflict?

Gently restore: How can I lovingly serve others by helping them take responsibility for their contribution to this conflict? Go and be reconciled: How can I demonstrate the forgiveness of God and encourage a reasonable solution to this conflict?

We should give up our rights when doing so will draw attention to God's goodness and power, bring Him praise, expand outreach of gospel, and seek good of others 1 Cor - Ask yourself, "Will exercising my rights honor God by showing the power of the gospel in my life?

Will it benefit others? Is it essential for my wellbeing? Conflict Starts in the Heart Conflict comes from being controlled by unmet desires of our heart James Progression: desire something, demand it, judge those who won't fulfill desire, punish those who withhold it.

It's anything we love, fear, or trust. Ask God to replace your idols with a growing love for Him and a consuming desire to worship Him alone.

Sin and idolatry are what we do when we're not fully satisfied in God. Confession Brings Freedom Ask God to help you see your sin clearly and repent.

Accept the consequences such as making restitution 6. Alter your behavior change your behavior and attitudes 7.

Ask for forgiveness allow person time to forgive if necessary Part 3: Gently Restore Just between the Two of You Matt tells how to confront someone who has offended us.

Bible gives positive examples of indirect approach rather than direct confrontation: Jesus and adulterous Samaritan woman, Jesus' parables and stories, Paul speaking to Athenians about idolatry, Esther's banquets.

Ask God for most winsome and effective way to approach. It's sometimes better to involve neutral intermediaries before meeting personally with someone who's wronged you Joseph in Gen 50; Abigail in 1 Sam 25; Barnabas in Acts 9.

This may be best in abuse situations. Matt doesn't forbid correction; it tells when and how to correct. Matt doesn't forbid personal correction; it forbids taking law into your hands and seeking vengeance, and teaches to endure personal injury that results from our Christian witness without retaliating.

Speak the Truth in Love If you don't have trusting relationship with person, or issue is likely to trigger defensiveness, broach concern indirectly.

A story that touches person's heart is one of best ways to do this. Describe concern in way that captures attention, appeals to values, gives hope that issue can be resolved.

Engage heart rather than declaring wrongs. Overlook minor offenses. Talk in private. Talk to godly counselors as necessary Matt Involve others by mutual or unilateral decision Matt ; Phil Inform church leaders and request assistance Matt Treat person as unbeliever.

If a person behaves as an unbeliever, treat them as one. Consider withdrawing membership privileges communion, church office, teaching, etc.

Look for every opportunity to evangelize person. If they're disruptive to church, exclude from church property, but otherwise, welcome them to worship as you do other unbelievers.

Speak well of opponent whenever possible. Use wise, gracious language. Ultimate weapon: deliberate, focused love for opponent Rom Jan 15, Jeff Burket rated it really liked it.

Lovely book that seeks to connect the deeply theologically profound the central Christian tenant that Christ died for our sins while we were still sinners and we are to live our lives in response to this truth with the very practical- in this case conflict management.

It seeks to do what we as Christians should always do yet often fail to - consider how the gospel speaks to and guides a specific way we go about our life, relationships, and communication.

Especially in areas of conflict and n Lovely book that seeks to connect the deeply theologically profound the central Christian tenant that Christ died for our sins while we were still sinners and we are to live our lives in response to this truth with the very practical- in this case conflict management.

Especially in areas of conflict and negotiation, we too often get focused on our 'rights' or 'winning,' instead of thinking explicitly thinking of how the gospel should shape our approach.

The four parts if the book track the theme: start with keeping a focus on God and the goal of glorifying him; then look at your own sin and involvement first; then reach out to restore the other person; then truly go and reconcile with the person.

Good summaries and thought provoking questions at the end of each chapter. Good scriptural references and logical flow; like most christian living books it's a little redundant and wordy at times.

As far as specific practical steps, many of the ideas mesh well with those outlined in other great books on communication and conflict: getting to yes, the arbinger institute books, crucial conversations, and others.

What makes this more unique is the clear gospel center. Especially as interpersonal conflict is always a feature of life, would highly recommend any Christian read it I genuinely appreciate the guidance it gives towards institutionalizing the ideas in the book to build a "culture of peace" in your local church.

Also includes a helpful set of appendices that one can use to help them think through the peacemaking process. The only drawback or maybe incompleteness is a better word is that the book really focuses on interpersonal conflict resolution I thinks a true and broad culture of peace is a church and people that speak openly about truth, justice, equality and seek to apply those principles which build and set conditions for future reconciliation and peace on issues beyond interpersonal conflict, but that is beyond the scope of this book.

Some quotes and summaries that explore the theme more deeply; Glorify God -"Most importantly, the bible teaches that we should see conflict neither as an inconvenience nor as an occasion to force our will on others, but rather as an opportunity to demonstrate the power and love of God in our lives" -the best way to to glorify god in the midst of conflict is to depend on and draw attention to His grace, that is, his underserved love, mercy forgiveness, strength he gives us through Jesus Christ -"Everytime you encounter a conflict, you will inevitably show what you really think of God" -"Conflict provides an opportunity to serve others" Get the Log Out of Your Own Eye -"God may also use conflict to expose sinful attitudes and habits in your own life Worry less about going through conflict and more about growing through conflict" -We can choose responses that are attack oriented, escape oriented Gently Restore -"If you learn that someone has something against you, God wants you to take the initiative in seeking peace - even if you do not believe you have done anything wrong" -quoting Bonhoeffer "nothing can be more compassionate than a severe rebuke that calls a brother back from the path of sin.

Therefore, they should be the most forgiving Forgiveness is not a feeling. It is a act of will. Forgiveness involves a series of decisions Second, forgiveness is not forgetting.

Forgetting is a passive process Forgiving is an active process. To forgive someone means to release them from liability to suffer punishment or penalty Instead of reacting spitefully to those who mistreat you, Jesus wants you to discern their deepest need and do all you can to meet those needs At the very least, actively loving an enemy will protect you from being spiritually defeated by anger, bitterness, and thirst for revenge.

Nov 30, Jon Harris rated it it was amazing Shelves: counseling. In a down-to-earth way, Sande explores what the Bible has to say about peacemaking, while at the same time interjecting his own powerful personal and career-related experience to demonstrate its applicability.

Did you know that the central message of the Bible is that of making peace between parties adverse to each other? Is this not what the Father himself did in making those who were contrary to Him reconciled through the blood of His Son?

For the Christian, being a peacemaker is a non-negotiable. It provides a simple yet comprehensive approach to resolving conflict.

Is not the source your pleasures that wage war in your members? Wen we want something and feel that we will not be satisfied unless we get it, that desire starts to control us.

If others fail to meet our desires, we sometimes condemn them in our hearts and fight harder to get our own way. So then, what is the remedy for this damning conflict ridden problem we all seem to possess?

Sande proposes a replacement strategy that starts with dethroning our idol of choice. The object of our action is always rooted in the Lord.

Before providing a useful heart diagnostic at the end of the chapter entitled Conflict Starts in the Heart, Sande summarizes: James provides a key principle for understanding and resolving conflict.

Whenever we have a serious dispute with others, we should always look carefully at our own hearts to see whether we are being controlled by unmet desires that we have turned into idols.

But no matter how good or legitimate a desire may look on the surface, if we have gotten to te point where we cannot be content, fulfilled, or secure unless we have it, that desire has evolved into an idol that has diverted our love and trust from God.

Lest someone should think that the Peacemaker is all about correcting personal sin, let me affirm the fact that this work also provides a complete strategy for dealing with multiple party conflicts, even if you are not identified with one of the parties, or are involved but have not done anything necessarily wrong.

When an individual is a party to a conflict, Sande maintains that they have six possible negative responses to choose from — denial, flight, suicide, assault, litigation, or murder — and three basic obedient responses to select from — overlooking, reconciliation, or negotiation.

It does effectively teach the Biblical principles behind biblical counseling. The only criticism I would personally harbor is very slight. I believe Sande could have done a better job at exegeting biblical texts and using better biblical translations.

I do realize that he is trying to reach a broad audience however, so part of this is understandable.

I would recommend this book to anyone struggling with conflict. Sep 06, Matt rated it it was amazing. This is a truly useful book for any Christian not living in seclusion
